The Cardinals Spread It Out Like No Other Team But How Much

Play-action is more effective, especially with fewer receiversExpected points added (EPA) by the number of eligible receivers in route, for play-action plays vs. all other dropbacks, 2017-18 regular seasons 525,73944.8%+0.04 Is adding more receivers to a play ineffective?Expected points added (EPA) per play by number of eligible receivers running routes, for 2017-18 regular-season plays New Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury and Arizona have brought a variant of the Hal Mumme Air Raid to the NFL, and while the Cardinals didn’t earn a Week 1 win — they tied the Detroit Lions in their home opener — the system lived up to its billing. Known for its spread concepts and heavy use of the forward pass, the Air Raid relies on a smart, accurate passer to distribute the ball to a bevy of playmakers sent into routes that attack all areas of the field. And spread they did. With first overall pick Kyler Murray running the offense, the Cardinals trotted out more four wide receiver sets (45) on Sunday than the rest of the NFL combined (36).Clearly Kingsbury isn’t afraid to be different, but it comes with risks. Going four-wide is an approach that hasn’t typically paid off for NFL offenses. In the 2017 and 2018 seasons, NFL teams ran 1,185 plays from four-WR sets and ended up stubbing their toes. Over that fairly large sample, the expected points added per play across the league was negative, at -0.03 EPA per play. Meanwhile, teams found success featuring fewer wideouts, averaging positive EPA per play numbers with their personnel groups of two and three wide receivers.1Two-WR formations earned 0.04 EPA play, while three-WR formations earned 0.02 EPA play.[/footnote.That pattern continued in Week 1: Teams averaged -0.03 EPA per play on passes with four wide receivers — right in line with the two-year average.[footnote]On 86 dropbacks. As we saw, the Cardinals were responsible for the majority of those plays, though, so it’s encouraging they performed slightly better than the league mean, earning -0.01 EPA per play. The Air Raid encompasses a set of passing concepts that many teams have integrated into their schemes, so it’s not completely new. Andy Reid of the Chiefs incorporated parts of the Air Raid into his system to suit the specific strengths of Patrick Mahomes, Kingsbury’s former QB at Texas Tech. But the difference for the Cardinals may be in the details. Kingsbury used wide splits and 3×1 wide receiver sets often to stress the Lions defense with his four wideouts, and Murray improved as the game went on. Perhaps they have what it takes to make four-wide in the NFL successful. But we also wondered: Wide receivers aside, does a team having more eligible receivers running routes lead to more production in the NFL? Or do offenses benefit when players stay in to protect their QB? Source: ESPN Stats & Information Group play-actionnon-play-action 31,43848.8+0.221,13040.3-0.01 If your goal is to fool your opponent into thinking you’re going to run the ball, bringing in a bunch of players who look like blockers is probably a good idea. That’s an intuitive finding that makes sense. Meanwhile, it’s also heartening to see that adding eligible receivers to the route design of a non-play-action passing play leads to greater passing efficiency. That’s also a finding that we’d expect — the more passing options the better! It’s no surprise that play-action continues to show up as one of the most efficient play types in football. Analysts have been calling it the NFL’s corner three for years. But it’s still somewhat shocking to see just how pervasive and massive an effect a little deception can have on the success of an offense. It will be interesting to see how much play-action the Cardinals incorporate into their attack moving forward. With a healthy dose, along with the ability to successfully flood the field with wide receivers over the course of 16 games, Arizona shouldn’t stay near the bottom of our Elo rankings for long.Check out our latest NFL predictions. 52,75349.0+0.1522,48244.3%+0.03 ≤ 242353.6+0.4276438.3-0.05 42,78350.6+0.216,17142.5+0.01 2 or fewer1,20139.0-0.03 32,67245.0+0.12 Based on success rate2The share of those plays with a positive EPA. and EPA per play, the optimum number of receivers to send out into routes is three. NFL rules dictate that five receivers at most can report as eligible to catch a pass on any given play,3The sixth non-lineman must pass the ball and is normally referred to as the quarterback. so this finding would appear to support passing out of heavy sets with big tight ends staying home to help shore up the pass blocking. Or perhaps teams should keep a running back in the backfield to help chip rushing defenders. But it also could be that those heavier sets are effective because of the deception they afford via the play-action pass.To find out, we broke out all plays by the number of receivers and then split the plays by play-action and non-play-action. When we look at the plays this way, we find that play-action accounts for all the efficiency we see from the plays with three or fewer receivers. When play-action snaps are removed, passes with three or fewer receivers have a negative expected value leaguewide. 49,41944.9+0.07 Source: ESPN Stats & Information Group Routesdropbackssuccess rateepa per playdropbackssuccess rateepa per play Number of RoutesDropbacksSuccess RateEPA per play read more

Drill Mounted Pencil Sharpener is LowTech Fun

first_imgThis little gadget is essentially a standard pencil sharpener that most of us probably had in elementary school and many of us still have today – just attached to a drill bit so you can pop it into any standard hand-held drill. It may sound crazy, but the C.H. Hanson Pro-Sharp Finishing Pencil Carpenter is a real product, and you can buy it at Amazon for just under $8 US, not including shipping. Amazon reviewers are clearly fond of the device, but unless you’re a teacher who has to provide a room full of number 2 pencils to go with your next Scantron-based exam, it might be a little overkill. After all, you’re guaranteed to get strange looks from your classmates if you roll into your final exams with a cordless drill with the Pencil Carpenter mounted on the end and a box of pencils. Did we mention that the device comes with 4 finishing pencils you can use with the device? Clearly it’s a bargain.[via NotCot]last_img read more

Le 19 février 2010 à 14:29 • Emmanuel Perrinlast_img read more

The 40.5 percent increase in streams is likewise up from the 36.4 percent growth rate clocked by Nielsen just three months ago, proving that the market still has plenty of growth headroom.Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” this year’s most-streamed track so far, has already pulled in 1.11 billion streams. That’s almost twice what Desiigner’s “Panda” had achieved by the end of Q3 last year. Furthermore, another six tracks have also surpassed the 674.4 million streams that Desiigner’s “Panda” had by this time last year.On the album side, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. currently leads the charge with 2.35 million consumption units, with Ed Sheeran and Drake’s 2017 offerings coming in second and third at 2.13 million and 2 million, respectively. Both physical album sales and single track downloads showed continued declines, while vinyl album sales notched a slight 3.1 percent increase. The best-selling vinyl album of the year so far? The Beatles’ Sgt. Mandya exit poll result Sumalatha likely to defeat HD Kumaraswamys son Nikhil

first_imgtwitterThe exit poll for the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency is out and Sumalatha is likely to emerge victorious by defeating Nikhil Kumar. The majority of exit poll have predicted her victory. India Today-Axis Poll and Republic TV exit poll have stated that Sumalatha, actress and wife of late former Congress leader Ambareesh, is likely to defeat Nikhil Kumaraswamy, actor and son of Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy. Likewise, Suvarna News and TV9 are also expecting Sumalatha to defeat Nikhil. However, Times Now predicts the latter to have the last laugh in the what is considered to be a prestigious seat for the JD(S).Sumalatha contested as an independent contestant after Congress, owing to the coalition compulsions, gave away the seat to its partner JD(S). The BJP too supported her candidature and did not field any candidate. She got the backing from a section of Congress workers which seem to have benefited her to a large extent. The yesteryear actress was actively supported by Challenging Star Darshan and Rocking Star Yash.Among the 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka, Mandya hogged all the attention and it was spiced up by HDK’s attack on Sumalatha and her star campaigners – Darshan and Yash.Coming to entire Karnataka, the BJP is once again getting the maximum Lok Sabha seats. The polls indicate that it is likely to get 18 seats.last_img read more

The Physics of Building Jumps in The Matrix

first_imgWait. You haven’t seen The Matrix? It’s a modern sci-fi classic and now it’s also 20 years old. Well, you should watch it. Here’s the basic idea—some dude (Neo) finds out he’s been living in a computer program. Since his world isn’t “real,” he is able to do some superhuman things—like dodge bullets and jump from one building to the next.Yes, this building jump is what I want to look at. It’s one of the first real tests for Neo as he learns to manipulate this computer world. The goal is to run and jump from the top of one very tall building to the next building. Morpheus starts off to show Neo how to do it and makes it easily. Neo crashes. Good thing it’s not real life.Even though this is just a computer simulation, it’s still fun to consider how a human could make this jump. Let’s go over two possible methods to make this jump (in the Matrix).Running Really Really FastA normal human couldn’t make that building-to-building jump in the real world. But what if you could run faster? How fast would you have to run to make that jump? Of course the first question: How far apart are the building? I’ll be honest. I spent quite a bit of time looking for these EXACT buildings in real life. I failed. However, it looks like it’s just two normal buildings across the street from each other. Based on my measurements from real buildings (on Google maps), I think 25 meters seems fair. So, how fast do you have to run to make a jump this far? Assuming the air resistance is negligible, this becomes a standard physics projectile motion problem. Once Neo is in the air, the only force acting on him is the downward gravitational force. This means that his horizontal velocity is constant and his vertical acceleration is -9.8 m/s2 (we call this -g).The horizontal and vertical motion can be treated as two separate kinematics problems to produce the following equations. Rhett AllainAlthough the horizontal and vertical motions are mostly independent, they still happen in the same amount of time (t). If I solve for the total time in one direction, I can use that in the other direction. That’s just what I’m going to do.OK, so in this case I am going to assume the human (computer model of a human) is running really fast. At the edge of the building the human pushes up off the ground to initiate the jump. However, it’s just a normal human running fast. This means that the vertical jump is still a normal jump with a normal vertical height. Let’s say that the human can jump with a vertical height of 1 meter. This would give a hang time of 0.6 seconds. Yes, I know it seems longer than that but it’s not.Now back to the horizontal motion. Neo has just 0.6 seconds to go all the way across from one building to the next. With a change in distance of 25 meters in just 0.6 seconds that means he must run with a speed of 41.7 meters per second (93 mph).I told you it was really fast.Jumping Really HardYes, this is similar to the previous jumping method. However, in this case the human is going to have a launch speed in both the vertical and horizontal directions instead of just running fast. This means that Neo will be in the air for much longer than 0.6 seconds so that he won’t have to have as large of a horizontal velocity. But this also means that he is going to need a super human push on the ground to get him into the air. Change the Gravitational FieldThe Matrix isn’t real. So why would anyone have to constrain themselves to real things? Instead of running fast or jumping fast, you could just change the gravitational field. The gravitational field is the force per unit mass on the surface of the Earth. We usually use the symbol “g” for this and it has a typical value of 9.8 Newtons per kilogram. But if you drop (or throw) an object, both the force (weight) and the acceleration depend on the mass of the object in the same way. This means that all falling objects have the same vertical acceleration of 9.8 meters per second squared (which is an equivalent unit to N/kg).If you decrease this gravitational field, you should be able to jump farther. But what value should you use if you can change it? How about looking at the successful building jump by Morpheus? From the video, he takes about 4.2 seconds to complete the jump. If I assume he jumps like a normal human with an upward speed of 3 m/s (this would give a 0.6 second hang time), then the gravitational field would be 1.4 N/kg. Oh, this is about the same gravitational field as the surface of the moon (1.6 N/kg). Maybe that’s how Morpheus does it. He just pretends he is on the moon.If you need some homework, how about you repeat these three calculations but include air resistance? That would be fun. Rhett AllainThis human jumps with an initial velocity of v0, but that means there is a component of velocity in the x-direction and the y-direction that depends on the launch angle. What angle is the best? Well, maybe it’s not the best but if you want the maximum horizontal range for that velocity then the angle should be 45 degrees. Why? I’ll just leave this older derivation here—but you need to be careful. A launch angle of 45 degrees is only the maximum range for cases that start and end at the same height (level ground). Also, this doesn’t work if there is air resistance on the projectile. You have been warned.Since this case deals with “level ground” and no air resistance (because I said so), then I can easily find the launch velocity to travel a horizontal distance of x2 (assuming it starts at x = 0).Rhett AllainFor a distance of 25 meters, Neo would have to jump at a 45 degree angle with a launch speed of 15.6 m/s (34.8 mph). That’s not humanly possible, but at least it’s a slower speed than just running. first_imgCapital One Financial Corp., one of the largest banks in the United States, has been subject to a massive data breach affecting 100 million customers in the U.S and an additional 6 million in Canada. Capital One said the hacker exploited a configuration vulnerability in its firewall that allowed access to the data. In its official statement released yesterday, Capital One revealed that on July 19, it determined an “unauthorized access by an outside individual who obtained certain types of personal information relating to people who had applied for its credit card products and to Capital One credit card customers.” Paige A. Thompson, 33, the alleged hacker who broke into Capital One server, was arrested yesterday and appeared in federal court in Seattle. She was an ex-employee from Amazon’s Cloud service ( AWS), Amazon confirms. The Capital One hacker, an ex-AWS employee, “left a trail online for investigators to follow” FBI Special Agent Joel Martini wrote in a criminal complaint filed on Monday that a “GitHub account belonging to Thompson showed that, earlier this year, someone exploited a firewall vulnerability in Capital One’s network that allowed an attacker to execute a series of commands on the bank’s servers”, according to Ars Technica. IP addresses and other evidence ultimately showed that Thompson was the person who exploited the vulnerability and posted the data to Github, Martini said. “Thompson allegedly used a VPN from IPredator and Tor in an attempt to cover her tracks. At the same time, Martini said that much of the evidence tying her to the intrusion came directly from things she posted to social media or put in direct messages”, Ars Technica reports. On  July 17, a tipster wrote to a Capital One security hotline, warning that some of the bank’s data appeared to have been “leaked,” the criminal complaint said. According to The New York Times, Thompson “left a trail online for investigators to follow as she boasted about the hacking, according to court documents in Seattle”. She is listed as the organizer of a group on Meetup, a social network, called Seattle Warez Kiddies, a gathering for “anybody with an appreciation for distributed systems, programming, hacking, cracking.” The F.B.I. noticed her activity on Meetup and used it to trace her other online activities, eventually linking her to posts boasting about the data theft on Twitter and the Slack messaging service.  “I’ve basically strapped myself with a bomb vest, dropping capital ones dox and admitting it,” Thompson posted on Slack, prosecutors say. Highly sensitive financial and social insurance data compromised The stolen data was stored in Amazon S3, “An AWS spokesman confirmed that the company’s cloud had stored the Capital One data that was stolen, and said it wasn’t accessed through a breach or vulnerability in AWS systems“, Bloomberg reports. Capital One said the largest category of information accessed was information on consumers and small businesses as of the time they applied for one of its credit card products from 2005 through early 2019. The breached data included personal information Capital One routinely collects at the time it receives credit card applications, including names, addresses, zip codes/postal codes, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, and self-reported income. The hacker also obtained customer status data, e.g., credit scores, credit limits, balances, payment history, contact information including fragments of transaction data from a total of 23 days during 2016, 2017 and 2018. For the Canadian credit card customers, approximately 1 million Social Insurance Numbers were compromised in this incident. About 140,000 Social Security numbers of Capital One’s credit card customers and about 80,000 linked bank account numbers of our secured credit card customers were compromised. Richard D. Fairbank, Capital One’s chief executive officer, said in a statement, “I am deeply sorry for what has happened. I sincerely apologize for the understandable worry this incident must be causing those affected.” Thompson is charged with computer fraud and faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. U.S. Magistrate Judge Mary Alice Theiler ordered Thompson to be held. A bail hearing is set for Aug 1. Capital One said, it “will notify affected individuals through a variety of channels. We will make free credit monitoring and identity protection available to everyone affected”. Capital One’s justification of “Facts” is unsatisfactory Users are very skeptical about trusting Capital One with their data going ahead. A user on Hacker News writes, “Obviously this person committed a criminal act, however, Capital One should also shoulder responsibility for not securing customer data. I have a feeling we’d be waiting a long time for accountability on C1’s part.” Security experts are surprised with Capital One’s stating of “facts that say “no Social Security numbers were breached’ and say this cannot be true. Similar to Capital One, there were other data breaches in the past where the companies have agreed on a settlement to help the affected customers like the Equifax or have been levied with huge fines like the Marriott International and British Airways. The Equifax data breach that affected 143 million U.S. consumers on September 7, 2017, resulted in a global settlement including up to $425 million to help people affected by the data breach amounting to approximately $125 per affected victim, should they apply for compensation. This global settlement was done with the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and 50 U.S. states and territories. The Marriott data breach occurred in Marriott’s Starwood guest database that compromised 383 million user data was revealed on November 19, 2018. Recently, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in the UK announced its plans to impose a fine of more than £99 million ($124 million) under GDPR. The British Airways data breach compromised personal identification information of over 500,000 customers and is believed to have begun in June 2018. Early this month, the ICO also announced it will fine British Airways with more than £183m fine. As a major data breach in one of the largest banks, Capital One could feel the pinch by regulators soon. What sets this case apart from the above breaches is that the affected customers are from the US and Canada and not from the EU. In the absence of regulatory action by the ICO or the EU commission, it is yet to be seen if regulators in the US and Canada will rise to the challenge. Also, now that the alleged hacker has been arrested, does this mean Capital One could slip by without paying any significant fine? Only time can tell if Capital One will pay a huge sum to the regulators for not being watchful of their customers’ data in two different states. If the Equifax-FTC case and the Facebook-FTC proceedings are any sign of things to come, Capital One has not much to be concerned about. In fact, Alabama won three SEC title and registered three College Football Playoff appearances with three starting quarterbacks — each with a different skill set, each with the attack tailored to his strengths — in the three years Kiffin called plays for Alabama. The 2016 edition was piloted by true freshman Jalen Hurts, who completed 220-of-337 passes (65.3 percent) for 2,592 yards (7.7 per attempt) with 22 touchdowns against nine interceptions while ranking as the team’s second-leading rusher, carrying 162 times for 841 yards with a team-high 12 touchdowns. Hurts’s 841 yards and dozen scores are by far the most for any Tide quarterback in the Nick Saban era, previously topped by Blake Sims’s 350 yards and seven scores in 2014, further proving Kiffin’s ability to mold the offense to its talent. On the ground, Damien Harris led an Alabama attack that ranked 14th nationally in rushing and eighth in yards per carry with 3,185 yards and 28 touchdowns on 555 carries. The Tide ranked in the top-10 nationally for rushes of 10-plus, 20-plus and 30-plus yards. As a group, Alabama ranked 29th in red zone conversions and 14th on third downs. Their 471.3 total yards per game and 6.62 per play stand second in the SEC, and their 40.5 points per game average led the conference by a full four points per game. This is the first time a Saban-led Alabama team has led the conference in scoring.Hurts, wide receiver ArDarius Stewart and offensive lineman Cam Robinson earned First Team All-SEC nods, and tight end O.J. Howard and wide receiver Calvin Ridley garnered Second Team All-SEC accolades. Hurts also netted Freshman All-America honors from ESPN and USA Today and was named the SEC’s Offensive Player of the Year by the league’s coaches and the Associated Press.Kiffin began coaching as an undergraduate assistant when, as he put it, future No. 1 pick David Carr arrived at Fresno State as a true freshman and promptly pushed him into coaching. His first official job was as a graduate assistant at Colorado State in 1999. Kiffin spent a year as a quality control assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars before joining Pete Carroll’s staff at USC, first as tight ends coach, then wide receivers, then as passing game coordinator and offensive coordinator. He deposited stints as head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee and USC before joining Saban’s staff in 2014.He was named Florida Atlantic’s head coach on Dec. 13.“Lane did a phenomenal job for us over the last three years, and we appreciate the impact he made to the success of the program. We are excited for him to have this opportunity to be the head coach at Florida Atlantic, and we wish him all the best,” Saban said. “He did a tremendous job of molding an offensive system that fit our players, and he is a great hire for the Florida Atlantic football program.”The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by ProGrass are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Matt Canada [Pittsburgh], Darrin Chiaverini/Brian Lindgren [Colorado], Kirk Ciarrocca [Western Michigan], Ivin Jasper [Navy], Joe Moorhead [Penn State], Lincoln Riley [Oklahoma], Jonathan Smith [Washington] and Kiffin) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. The prior winners selected this year’s winner.Kiffin will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention in January.Previous winners of the Offensive Coordinator of the Year award are Kevin Wilson (Oklahoma, 2008), Bryan Harsin (Boise State, 2009), Gus Malzahn (Auburn, 2010), Kliff Kingsbury (Houston, 2011 and Texas A&M, 2012), Philip Montgomery (Baylor, 2013), Tom Herman (Ohio State, 2014) and Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma, 2015). 18th Nationally – Yards Per Play          14th Nationally – Rushing Lane Kiffin – University of Alabama 13th Nationally – Scoring          First Saban team to lead SEC in scoring FootballScoop is proud to announce that Lane Kiffin is the 2016 FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year presented by ProGrass as selected by prior winners. It would be understandable if Alabama’s offense took a step back in 2016. After all, the Tide lost the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and added a true freshman starting quarterback.Instead, the Tide got better.last_img read more

New York – As a result of the nations continued e

first_imgNew York – As a result of the nation’s continued economic uncertainty and faltering credit markets, private jet charter will grow as people sell their planes to reduce overhead or opt out of renewing their fractional commitments, according to Jeffrey Menaged, CEO of Chief Executive Air.“Our customer acquisition rate continues to accelerate, thanks in part to our long held policy of everyday value pricing and because private jet charter has no upfront cost,” said Menaged. “We feel that in today’s volatile market people are looking to preserve cash and capital. Private jet charter requires no initial investment and allows people to pay as they go.“Even during fiscally challenging times, travel remains a necessity for many people,” Menaged added. “Whether seeking the convenience and efficiency private jet travel affords business travelers or the safety and security it offers high net worth individuals and entertainers, private jet use continues.”Menaged predicts that as an on-demand charter company, Chief Executive Air may see a decline in business from a marginal user, but it will gain considerable market share among frequent fliers like high net worth individuals and big corporations for whom private travel is a necessity thanks to the company’s unique pay-as-you-fly approach.“The pay-as-you-go approach is slowly taking hold industry-wide because the business climate has changed for the better in terms of private jet charters,” Menaged said. “I would say we expect our client growth rate to double over the next quarter in large part due to the faltering economy.”About Chief Executive Air (www.chiefexecair.com) Chief Executive Air is a full-service private aviation company specializing in aircraft charters.
